COMBINING 360 AERIAL FOOTAGE WITH HIGHLY DETAILED VR MODELLING AND INTERACTIONS.

Merging 360-degree footage of the Wicklow mountains with a hyper-real helicopter model resulted in an experience for the Air Corps which has to be seen to be believed.

Customer Profile

The Irish Air Corps provides for the military air defence of Ireland’s airspace. In peacetime, the Air Corps is also responsible for non-military support roles such as Garda air support, air-sea rescue and ambulance services as well as fisheries protection.

CHALLENGE

For this project we were tasked with providing an authentic and realistic virtual reality experience of a rescue operation for the Irish Air Corps.

SOLUTION

In collaboration with the Air Corps we carried out 360 degree video filming of a training rescue operation in mountainous terrain.  We then combined this with an interactive system where viewers could simulate the steps of a rescue scenario.  This approach gave a fully authentic experience of what a rescue involves with a level of immersion that only VR can bring.

RESULT

The Air Corps rescue experience is currently in use by the Defence Forces to promote and demonstrate one of the key roles the Air Corps carries out in Ireland.

“Since working with VRAI to create a virtual tour of our Ascentis warehouse, 94% of users said they have learned something new (compared to the physical tour) and their understanding of the operation has increased from an average of 5/10, to 8/10. Moreover, we have managed to reduce tour timings from 90 minutes to 15 minutes. The experience has also inspired colleagues to explore how virtual reality could be used in other parts of our business.”
